From Patrol to Area Manager: Neil’s Roadside Rescue Career Journey

“When I saw the Area Manager job come up, I jumped at the chance…”

At Green Flag, we’re proud to support career journeys that start on the roadside and grow into leadership. Neil, one of our Area Managers, shares how his passion for cars and helping people led him from patrol work to leading teams and shaping the future of roadside rescue.

What attracted you to a career in roadside repairs?

“In my early 20’s I quickly came to the realisation that my love of cars was not fulfilled working at a local garage, so I went on to fulfil my ambition and work as a patrolman.”

Neil’s career spans over two decades, including roles in the UK and Australia. He’s worked as a roadside patrol, technical specialist in control, performance leader, team leader, and mentor for new recruits.

“I’ve loved every second of it.”

Why did you decide to join Green Flag?

Back in 2023, Neil heard that Green Flag was recruiting its own patrols and had ambitious plans to grow.

“The thought of this really excited me. I wanted to be part of that growth.”

He kept an eye out for opportunities and when the Area Manager role came up, he applied straight away—with fingers crossed.

Has the role lived up to your expectations?

“Yes, definitely! Green Flag supports my ambition for a long-lasting career full of growth and excitement.”

Neil shares that the company has exceeded his expectations—not just in the role itself, but in the culture and opportunities.

“It’s a company that’s welcoming and makes me feel valued. I’ve been trusted with projects that allowed me to integrate into a high-performing team, share my ideas, and feel heard.”

He adds that the environment is energising and full of passionate people.

“It’s great to be working with individuals who all share the same growth aspirations. It’s an exciting environment to be in.”

What does a typical day look like for you as an Area Manager?

Neil’s role is a mix of day-to-day operations and strategic projects.

“I start my day reviewing stats, supporting my Team Leaders, and making sure they have everything they need to succeed.”

He also works on big-picture initiatives, like supporting apprentices and helping shape the future of Green Flag.

What exciting changes or developments are happening right now?

One of the most visible changes is the rollout of Green Flag’s iconic Transit Connect vans across the UK.

“We’re growing fast, with ambitions to have around 400 owned patrols on the roads by 2027. It’s an exciting time.”

What might surprise people about working in roadside rescue?

“Working in roadside rescue comes with a high level of danger when working at

the roadside and it’s not something you wouldn’t necessarily think about if you join from a completely different working environment.”

Neil emphasises that safety is a top priority.

“We pride ourselves on equipping every patrol for roadside safety.”

Why Neil loves working at Green Flag

“The most enjoyable part of working at Green Flag is the people. Everyone’s working toward the same goal, and I feel we’ll grow tighter through our journey.”

Neil also values the trust and support he’s received, and the opportunity to contribute ideas and lead projects.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career at Green Flag?

“Join Green Flag and you become part of our family. We take safety seriously, and we’re all passionate about doing our best work.”

Neil encourages anyone considering a career in roadside rescue to take the leap.

“You’ll be joining a team of problem solvers in a role full of opportunities to learn and grow.”
